Hello
Hi, I'm Alex, the academic lead. I've not been knighted so I don't answer to 'Sir.' Everybody can use my name.
I make sure that all our tutors are of a similar vision; we do things differently at Polestar. We don't build a lesson and try to fit a young person to it, we believe that that is exactly the wrong way round.
My Story
I’m a teacher with an unusual background. I came to teaching after a long career as a chef working in the UK and Australia. I find that this helps me deliver lessons that are based in the real world and around experiences which most students can relate to.
I have extensive experience working as a tutor and teacher online. I have taken the time to study how to best utilize various platforms to provide a tailored, unique experience for the student. All my lessons are delivered in a conversational style built around the student’s own needs and interests. I believe that online tuition and teaching, when done correctly can be more effective even than face-to-face delivery as it allows the educator to draw on more resources and build a live, dynamic experience for the student.
I know that when lessons are delivered online badly, they can be sadly lacklustre. I speak from first-hand experience having seen my own son, who has additional needs, flounder during lockdown periods. This was my motivation for growing as a teacher and tutor who can make an online delivery a portal to new worlds of understanding.
I have substantial experience working in alternative provisions and have worked with young people who exhibit challenging behaviour, have additional needs, or just struggle to cope with the complexities of a school system which, fundamentally, is a poor fit for most students.
My innovative style and personal passion for education coupled with my own desire to learn has allowed me to become an exceptional teacher across the core subjects working with both students who have struggled in school and those who are destined for the highest grades, and I have seen students I have worked with attaining a two or even three grade improvement.
I also have experience delivering functional skills, which I do in a fun and creative way, to students aged from sixteen to twenty-five. I am qualified to teach English as second language and have worked with students as young as three, but also with mature students who want to gain a mastery of the language as applied in specific academic fields.
